Conocimiento sobrenatural de la esencia divina

Supernatural Knowledge of the Divine Essence

7. THE SUPERNATURAL KNOWLEDGE OF THE DIVINE ESSENCE IN THIS LIFE THROUGH FAITH

The order of grace in this life is preliminary and preparatory to future glory: "Gratia et gloria ad idem genus referuntur, quia gratia nihil est aliud quam quaedam inchoatio gloriae in nobis" (grace and glory belong to the same genus, because grace is nothing else than a certain beginning of glory in us); S.th. 2 II 24, 3 ad 2. The immediate vision of God in the next life corresponds in this life to supernatural faith; the light of glory (lumen gloriae) corresponds to the light of faith (lumen fidei). Faith is, as it were, an anticipation of the vision of God in the life to come.
1. Faith and the Natural Knowledge of God
The knowledge of faith is distinguished from the natural knowledge of God by the subjective principle of knowledge (reason enlightened by faith), by the means of knowledge (divine revelation), and by the formal object (God as known through revelation: God, One and Triune). The primary objects of supernatural faith are the mysteries of faith, known only through divine revelation ("mysteria in Deo abscondita, quae, nisi revelata divinitus, innotescere non possunt"; Dz 1795). Divine revelation guarantees the infallible certainty of the truths of faith (certainty of faith). These truths therefore surpass those of natural reason in certainty. However, in clarity and intelligibility (certainty of evidence), the truths of natural reason surpass the truths of faith, for we can internally comprehend the former but not the latter. In this sense, we must understand the frequently quoted phrase of Hugh of Saint Victor (+ 1141): that the certainty of faith is below scientific knowledge (De sacramentis christ. fidei 1 10, 2: "Fidem esse certitudinem quandam animi de rebus absentibus, supra opinionem et infra scientiam constitutam"); cf. S.th. 2114,8.
2. Faith and the Immediate Vision of God
In comparison with the immediate vision of God in the next life, the supernatural knowledge of faith is more imperfect, although it is equally a participation in God's own knowledge. The most fundamental truths of faith exceed the capacity of human reason and, even after revelation, remain obscure and mysterious. Saint Paul (2 Cor 5:7) says: "For we walk by faith, not by sight"; cf. Dz 1796. Since supernatural revelation takes its concepts from the created world, the knowledge of faith is analogical, of which Saint Paul says (1 Cor 13:12): "For now we see in a mirror, dimly."
