5. El Objeto del Mérito
5. The Object of Merit
1. Objeto del mérito de condigno
1. Object of Condign Merit
The justified person merits, through good works, the increase of sanctifying grace, eternal life, and the increase of heavenly glory (of faith).
The Council of Trent declared: "If anyone shall say that the justified man by good works... does not truly merit increase of grace, eternal life, and the attainment of that eternal life (if he should die in grace), and also an increase of glory", let him be anathema; Dz 842. According to this declaration, three objects of true and proper merit must be distinguished:
Since grace is the prelude to glory, and glory is governed by the merit of good works, it follows that if the number of good works increases, the measure of grace will also increase. Just as glory is the object of merit, so is the increase of grace; cf. Dz 803, 834.
According to the doctrine of SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS, sanctifying grace does not always increase immediately after performing a good work, but rather when the soul is properly disposed; S.th. I-II 114, 8 ad 3.
b) La vida eternaEternal Life
That is, more precisely, the right to eternal life; and if at the hour of death one is found in a state of grace, then the actual attainment of eternal life.
As Sacred Scripture teaches us, eternal life is the reward for good works performed in this life; cf. Mt 19:29; 25:46; Rom 2:6-7; Jas 1:12.
The loss of justifying grace through mortal sin results in the loss of all prior merits. Good works remain inactive, as if dead ("opera mortificata"). However, according to the general consensus of theologians, they revive when the state of justification is restored ("opera vivificata"). See the treatise on penance, 16, 3.
Since, according to the definition of the Ecumenical Council of Florence, the degree of heavenly glory differs in each of the blessed according to the measure of their merits (Dz 693: "pro meritorum tamen diversitate"), an increase in merits will result in an increase in glory: "He who sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully" (2 Cor 9:6); cf. Mt 16:27; Rom 2:6; 1 Cor 3:8; Rev 22:12.
Iov. II 32-34).
TERTULLIAN comments: "Why are there many mansions in the Father's house (Jn 14:2), if not because of the diversity of merits?" (Scorp. 6). Jovinian's doctrine regarding the equality of heavenly glory for all the blessed was refuted by SAINT JEROME (Adv. Iov. II 32-34).
2. Objeto del mérito de congruo
2. Object of Congruous Merit
We possess no official Church Magisterium documents regarding this specific point. Because the concept of congruous merit is not univocal—since the claim of fitness or appropriateness on which it is based can be greater or lesser—there is a diversity of opinions among theologians.
a) El mérito de congruo del pecadorThe Congruous Merit of the Sinner
One who is in mortal sin can freely cooperate with actual grace to obtain further graces and thus prepare for justification, ultimately meriting the grace of justification de congruo (probable opinion); cf. Ps 50:19: "A broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise." SAINT AUGUSTINE states that the tax collector (Lk 18:9-14) "went down to his house justified through the merit of his faithful humility" ("merito fidelis humilitatis"; Ep. 194, 3, 9).
b) El mérito de congruo del justificadoThe Congruous Merit of the Justified
a') The justified person can merit de congruo (fallibly) the grace of final perseverance, in so far as it is fitting that God grant to the righteous person who has faithfully cooperated with grace all the actual graces necessary to persevere in the state of grace (probable opinion).
However, this right of the just to the grace of perseverance based on good works is small and therefore uncertain in outcome. The result of humble and persevering prayer, however, is certain; cf. Mt 7:7: "Ask and it will be given to you"; Jn 16:23: "Whatever you ask the Father in my name he will give you"; SAINT AUGUSTINE, De dono persev. 6, 10.
b') The justified person can merit de congruo (fallibly) for oneself the recovery of justifying grace after a future fall, in so far as it is fitting that God, moved by His mercy, grants His grace again to a sinner who previously performed much good while in a state of grace (probable opinion).
When SAINT THOMAS AQUINAS teaches (S.th. I-II 114, 7) that after falling into sin one cannot merit restoration through either condign or congruous merit, he is referring to congruous merit in the strict sense. In his commentary on Saint Paul's Epistle to the Hebrews (ch. 3 lect. 3), he uses the concept in a broader sense and affirms the possibility of such congruous merit.
c') On behalf of others, the justified person can merit de congruo what he can merit for himself, and additionally, on behalf of others, can also merit initial actual grace (probable opinion).
The possibility of meriting on behalf of others is rooted in the friendship of the righteous person with God and in the communion of saints. Prayer on behalf of others is even more effective than merit; cf. Jas 5:16: "Pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power"; 1 Tim 2:1-4.
I-II 114, 6.
Meriting de condigno on behalf of others is reserved strictly to Christ as head of the Church and author of salvation (Heb 2:10); cf. S.th. I-II 114, 6.
I-II 114, 10.
d') Temporal goods are objects of supernatural merit only insofar as they serve as a means to achieve eternal salvation (probable opinion); cf. S.th. I-II 114, 10.
