THE FOUNDATION OF THE TRINITY OF PERSONS IN GOD
10. THE IMMANENT DIVINE PROCESSIONS IN GENERAL
1. Notion and reality
In God there are two immanent divine processions (de fide).
Procession means that one thing originates from another. A distinction must be made between procession outward ("processio ad extra," transient procession) and procession inward ("processio ad intra," immanent procession), depending on whether the term of the procession goes outside the principle or remains within it. In the first way, all creatures proceed from God as first cause; in the second, the Son and the Holy Spirit proceed within the Trinity itself. Immanent divine procession designates the origin of one divine Person from another through the communication of the numerically one divine essence.
The creeds of faith speak of two immanent processions in God: the generation of the Son and the procession of the Holy Spirit; cf. Dz 86. These two processions are the reason why there are three really distinct hypostases or Persons in God. The term "procession" (processio) derives from Sacred Scripture; Jn 8:42: "I came forth from God" ("Ego ex Deo processi"); Jn 15:26: "...the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father" ("Spiritum veritatis, qui a Patre procedit"). As the context shows, neither passage refers to the eternal procession of the Son and the Holy Spirit, but to their temporal mission into the world. But the temporal mission is a sign of the eternal procession.
2. The subject of the immanent divine processions
The subject of the immanent divine processions (in the active and passive sense) is the divine Persons, not the divine nature (de fide).
The Fourth Lateran Council (1215) defended the doctrine of Peter Lombard against the attacks of Abbot Joachim of Fiore, declaring with that author: "That reality (i.e., the divine substance) neither begets nor is begotten nor proceeds; rather, it is the Father who begets, the Son who is begotten, and the Holy Spirit who proceeds"; Dz 432.
Sacred Scripture applies the verbs "to beget" and "to proceed" only to Persons. The speculative foundation is found in the axiom: "Actiones sunt suppositorum" ("Actions belong to the persons"); cf. S.th. I, q. 39, a. 5, ad 1.
