11. THE SON PROCEEDS FROM THE FATHER BY WAY OF GENERATION
The second divine Person proceeds from the first by generation and stands to him in the relation of Son to Father (de fide).
The Quicumque Creed confesses: "The Son is from the Father alone, not made, nor created, but begotten" (Dz 39); cf. the Nicene Creed (Dz 54).
According to the witness of Sacred Scripture, the first Person and the second stand to each other, respectively, in a relation of true and strict fatherhood and sonship. The characteristic name Scripture applies to the first Person is Father, and to the second, Son. Scripture is more precise still, calling the Father "his own Father" (Jn 5:18) and the Son "his own Son" (Rom 8:32), "the only-begotten Son" (Jn 1:14,18; 3:16,18; 1 Jn 4:9), "the beloved Son" (Mt 3:17; 17:5), "the true Son" (verus Filius; 1 Jn 5:20, Vulg.). There is no doubt, therefore, that the Son is distinct from God's adopted children (Rom 8:29). A proper and true sonship is achieved only through physical generation. The eternal generation of the Son by the Father is spoken of directly in Ps 2:7 and Heb 1:5: "You are my Son; today I have begotten you"; cf. Ps 110:3 according to the Vulgate text: "Ex utero ante luciferum genui te" (according to the new Latin version of the Biblical Institute: "before the daystar, like the dew, I have begotten you"). The Fathers and the councils of the fourth century ground the homoousios of the Son with the Father in this eternal generation.
