SPECULATIVE EXPOSITION OF THE TRINITARIAN DOGMA
Chapter One
SPECULATIVE EXPOSITION OF THE IMMANENT DIVINE PROCESSIONS
13. THE GENERATION OF THE SON BY THE FATHER THROUGH THE INTELLECT
1. Doctrine of the Church
The Son proceeds from the intellect of the Father (certain doctrine).
The Roman Catechism teaches (I, 3, 8, 3): "Among all the analogies that can be proposed to explain the nature of this eternal generation of the Son, the most fitting seems to be the one based on the intellectual activity of our mind, for which reason St. John calls the Son of God 'the Word.' For just as our mind, in knowing itself, produces an image of itself which theologians have called 'word,' so too — insofar as the human can be compared with the divine — God, in knowing himself, begets the eternal Word ('ita Deus seipsum intelligens Verbum aeternum generat')." Thus, the generation of the Son by the Father must be conceived as purely intellectual, that is, as an act of the intellect ("generatio per modum intellectus").
2. Positive argumentation
Sacred Scripture calls the second Person the Word of God. This designation clearly indicates that the Son is the Word ("verbum mentis") begotten by an intellectual act of the Father, that is, that he is the product of the Father's knowing. The name Wisdom, proper to the second Person (cf. the doctrine on Wisdom in the Old Testament books; 1 Cor 1:24), which thus alludes to the mode and manner of his origin, likewise shows clearly that the Son is begotten by the Father through a cognitive act ("per modum intellectus").
The expression "image of the invisible God" (Col 1:15) or "the imprint of God's substance" (Heb 1:3) clearly indicates that the Son is begotten by that activity of the Father which by nature has an assimilative tendency, that is, by a cognitive activity.
St. Ignatius of Antioch applies to Christ the following titles: "Word of God" (his Logos; Magn. 8:2), "the Father's thought" (Eph 3:2), "the knowledge of God" (Eph 17:2). St. Justin compares the generation of the Son to the production of speech by reason (Dial. 61:2). Athenagoras describes the Son of God as "the thought (nous) and word (logos) of the Father" (Suppl. 10); St. Irenaeus, as "the firstborn emanation of the Father's thought" (Epid. 39). St. Augustine explains the divine generation as an act of divine self-knowledge: "Thus, expressing himself, the Father begot the Word equal to himself in every way" (De Trin. XV, 14, 23).
3. Speculative argument
The Trinitarian processions are purely vital activities of the spirit, namely, knowing and willing. In God's knowing, all the elements essential to the concept of generation are verified. Aristotle defines generation as "the origin of a living being from a conjoined living principle, in likeness of nature." The assimilative tendency essential to the concept of generation corresponds, among spiritual activities, only to knowing; for the knower produces in the mind an image (similitudo) of the object known, whereas willing already presupposes a certain likeness between the object desired and the willing subject (S.th. I, q. 27, a. 4, ad 2). God the Father, in knowing himself, gives rise to the most perfect image of himself, the Son consubstantial with him.
There is discussion about the object of the divine knowledge by which the Father begets the Son. According to St. Thomas, this object includes everything contained in the Father's knowledge, that is, primarily ("principaliter et quasi per se") everything that is the object of necessary divine knowledge: the divine essence, the divine Persons, and the possibles; and secondarily ("ex consequenti et quasi per accidens") everything that is the object of free divine knowledge: the real beings that God has determined from all eternity to create; cf. De Verit. 4, 4-5; S.th. I, q. 34, a. 1, ad 3.
