In God there are three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit; and each of them
possesses the divine essence, which is numerically one and the same (de fide).
The terms "essence", "nature" and "substance" designate the divine being common
to the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, while the terms "hypostasis" and
"person" designate the three possessors of the divine being; cf. § 17, 1.
1. The oldest magisterial formula of the Church's faith in the Trinity is the Apostles' Creed, whose Roman baptismal form served from the second century onward as the basis for catechetical instruction and as a profession of faith at baptism. It is built upon the Trinitarian baptismal formula of Mt 28:19; cf. Dz 1-12.
2. A doctrinal letter of Pope Saint Dionysius (259-268) to Bishop Dionysius of Alexandria condemns Sabellianism, tritheism and subordinationism; Dz 48-51.
3. The Nicene Creed, born of the struggle against Arianism, affirms the true divinity of the Son and his consubstantiality (homoousios) with the Father; Dz 54.
4. The Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, the official profession of faith of the Second Ecumenical Council of Constantinople (381), issued in response to Arianism and Macedonianism, affirms both the divinity of the Son and the divinity of the Holy Spirit; Dz 86.
5. A Roman synod, held under Pope Saint Damasus (382), offers a collective condemnation of the ancient antitrinitarian errors, especially Macedonianism; Dz 58-82.
6. The Quicumque Creed (Athanasian Creed), not composed by Saint Athanasius but by an unknown Latin author of the fifth or sixth century, presents a clear and well-structured synthesis of the Church's doctrine on the Trinity and the Incarnation. Against Sabellianism it affirms the Trinity of Persons, and against tritheism, the numerical unity of the divine essence; Dz 39 ff.
7. The most perfect formulation of Trinitarian doctrine in the patristic era is the creed of the Eleventh Council of Toledo (675), composed as a mosaic of texts from the Fathers (especially Saint Augustine, Saint Fulgentius and Saint Isidore of Seville) and earlier synods (mainly the Sixth Council of Toledo, held in 638); Dz 275-281.
8. In the Middle Ages, the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), which condemned the tritheist error of Joachim of Fiore (Dz 428 ff), and the Council of Florence, which in the Decretum pro Iacobitis (1441) presented a compendium of Trinitarian doctrine considered the final point of the dogma's development (Dz 703 ff), are of great importance for the ecclesiastical formulation of the Trinitarian dogma.
9. In more modern times, mention must be made of a declaration of Pope Pius VI in the bull Auctorem fidei (1794), which rejects the expression "Deus unus in tribus personis distinctus" used by the Synod of Pistoia, since it endangered the absolute simplicity of the divine essence, declaring it more accurate to say: "Deus unus in tribus personis distinctis"; Dz 1596.
