La Unidad de la Operación Divina ad Extra
distintas personas ; cf. Lc 1, 35; Mt 1, 20; Phil 2, 7; Hebr 10, 5 (encarnación)

20. THE UNITY OF THE DIVINE OPERATION AD EXTRA
All of God's operations ad extra are common to the three divine Persons (de fide).
The Fourth Lateran Council (1215) teaches in the chapter Firmiter that the three divine Persons constitute a single principle of all things ("unum universorum principium"; Dz 428). The Council of Florence declares in the Decretum pro Iacobitis (1441): "The Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit are not three principles of creatures, but one principle"; Dz 704; cf. Dz 254, 281, 284.
The Church's doctrine opposes tritheism, which, together with the unity of the divine being, also abandons the unity of divine activity. According to A. Günther (d. 1863), the execution of God's universal plan is the exclusive work of the second Person, while the return of all creatures to God is exclusively the work of the third Person.
Christ testifies to the unity of his operation with that of the Father, grounding it in the unity of substance; Jn 5:19: "Whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise"; Jn 14:10: "The Father, who dwells in me, does his works." Sacred Scripture also teaches the unity of operation of the divine Persons by attributing the same works (e.g., the accomplishment of the Incarnation, the outpouring of supernatural graces, the forgiveness of sins) to different Persons; cf. Lk 1:35; Mt 1:20; Phil 2:7; Heb 10:5 (Incarnation); 1 Cor 12:4ff (the gifts of grace); Mt 9:2; Lk 7:48; Lk 23:34; Jn 20:22 (forgiveness of sins).
The Fathers infer the unity of divine operation from the unity of God's nature, which is the principium quo of his activity. St. Augustine, De Trin. I, 4, 7: "As the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are inseparable, so also do they work inseparably"; Sermo 213, 6, 6: "The works of the Trinity are inseparable" (Inseparabilia sunt opera Trinitatis).
